Send this article to a friend. • Mitchell Balmas of the Cape Breton Tradesmen and Declan Smith of the Cape Breton West Islanders were named to Team Nova Scotia for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s upcoming Excellence Challenge. The tournament is a showcase for players entering the 2014 QMJHL draft. Balmas was named the Nova Scotia EastLink Major Midget Hockey League’s rookie of the year this season after leading all first-year players with 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists) in 29 games. He also skated for Team Atlantic at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge held in Cape Breton. Smith was the top rookie scorer for the Islanders, netting 12 goals and adding nine assists for 21 points in 30 games. Cape Breton artists making their mark at East Coast Music Week in P.E.I. Team Nova Scotia leaves for the tournament on April 27. The event runs from May 1-4 at the Centre d’Excellence Sport Rousseau in Boisbriand, Que. A combine will be held April 30 before they begin play against Team P.E.I. on May 1. • Keeping with the major midget hockey loop, the Nova Scotia league announced its scholarship/bursary winners this week. Aaron Prosper of the Tradesmen won the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles major award of $2,000, along with an East Coast IceJam Tournament $500 scholarship. Michael Breski of the Tradesmen won a $500 Screaming Eagles scholarship and a $500 IceJam tournament scholarship as well. Also winning an IceJam tournament scholarship was Stephen Sisco of the Cape Breton West Islanders, who won a $1,000 award. • In our roundup this week of Cape Breton bodybuilders who competed at the Nova Scotia Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s provincial bodybuilding, fitness, physique, figure and bikini championships last Saturday in Halifax, one Cape Breton native wasn’t on our list. Jessica Lappin of Ross Ferry placed fourth in the bikini medium division. Well done on the strong showing, Jessica. • Congratulations to Chris Culligan of Howie Centre, who recently scored his first professional hockey goal with the Gwinnett Gladiators of the East Coast Hockey League. Culligan signed with the Gladiators after playing three games with the American Hockey League’s Texas Stars on an amateur tryout contract. The graduating New Brunswick Varsity Reds captain scored on the power play in the third period of a 4-3 loss to the Greenville Road Warriors on March 28. Culligan joined another former Cape Breton Screaming Eagles forward, Joey Haddad of Sydney, on the Gladiators’ roster. • The Nova Scotia atom ‘AAA’ hockey championship was played in New Waterford last week, and some local players were honoured with all-stars and awards. Hayden Forward of the host New Waterford Sharks was named the tournament’s most sportsmanlike player, while the Sydney Steelers were awarded with the Fair Play Award banner. As for all-stars, Ethan MacInnis of the Sharks was named to the second all-star team. At the tournament skills competition, Lewis Taylor of the Cape Breton West Screaming Eagles was the fastest skater, and teammate James Beaton won the breakaway competition for the shooters. • Just another reminder about the kick-off party and Masters Golf Tournament celebration at Dooly’s in Sydney on April 11. It will serve as the second annual pre-registration event for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation’s Play Fore Kids golf tournament. Organizers say those who plan to register a team, those who are part of a team and people who simply want to take part in the celebration are welcome. The evening includes a Masters pool (online registration required), golf simulator play, billiards, raffle draws, live music and munchie and drink specials. The annual golf tournament will be July 26 at The Lakes Golf Club. • Our condolences to the family of Buddy Bonnar who died on Sunday at the age of 82. The Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame and Glace Bay Sports Hall of Fame member expressed his love of sports on many fields and in many venues but was especially adept at softball, baseball and hockey. On the ball field he won junior and senior titles in the 1950s and 60s including the Maritime title in 1961 as a player and coach with the Caledonia Aces . Bonnar was also named to the 1969 Canada games Nova Scotia softball team and served as team captain. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
