They said the problem was not new and had in fact worsened over the past year. Long-time resident Zamri Mohd Zain said soil erosion and small landslips in the area were common occurrence. “Rocks and soil will fall onto the road, but fortunately no property or vehicle has suffered any damage so far,” said the 41-year-old, who has been living in the neighbourhood since 1998. “There are three large water tanks on top of a hill. “We are worried these might collapse in the event of a landslip,” said Zamri, adding that the latest soil movement was last Tuesday. Zamri along with other residents met up with Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han on a site visit recently. They were joined by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) and Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) representatives. Two parts of the slope were seen to have suffered soil erosion and were partially covered with canvas. Another section of the slope near the SK Bukit Kuchai school had been fitted with a retaining wall five years ago, according to resident Ghazali Tayib. “As Syabas has a water pipe running through that area as well as water reserves on top of the slope, they have done some upgrading near the school for safety reasons,” said Ghazali, a resident since 1992 and a member of the zone’s resident committee. Gobind called for immediate action plans by MPSJ, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and Syabas to strengthen the hillside, which stretches on for 100m and is approximately 30m high. He said Syabas had informed him that it would carry out upgrading works, which involved building retaining walls in two phases. The estimated cost for upgrading works is RM4.2mil and will be borne by Syabas. It is learnt that Syabas is waiting for budget approval from SPAN. “We need to do this as soon as possible as it concerns public safety,” he said, adding that the Selangor government had reserves that could be used to fund the project first, before claiming it back from the relevant agencies. “I urge MPSJ to bring this up to the council president as soon as possible so that they can do the relevant paperwork and submit it to the Mentri Besar for approval,” he said. Ng said he would also raise the matter to the state executive council for speedier action. “For now, one of the immediate steps to be carried out is covering the site with canvas to prevent further erosion,” said Gobind. Later, the group also made a site visit to a partially collapsed drain near Jalan 21. Part of the feeder drain, which channelled water to the main waterway, collapsed at the end of December 2013 because of erosion, resulting in a burst pipe. The situation worsened about a month ago as more debris fell and the road next to the drain was cordoned off for repair works.
