Comments (7)Follow LettersI realize that a daily such as The Augusta Chronicle must rely heavily on wire services to fill its pages. I also understand that those wire services are biased in favor of liberal positions, and that bias is evident in their stories. What I don’t understand is why a newspaper that has a strongly conservative editorial policy evinces such liberal bias in their proprietary stories. Recently your paper featured a front-page, cheerleading puff piece on Obamacare, including exhortations to sign up and instructions on how. Before that was a misleading one-sided front-page story on the benefits of raising the minimum wage, citing a conjectural number as fact, regarding how many would benefit from such an increase. And then, after many “news” articles about the admittedly debatable new law allowing concealed weapons in churches, I find out in the editorial section that it also bars authorities from seizing arms during times of public emergencies, a very laudable provision in what had been portrayed as a laughable law. I enjoy reading your paper – but frankly, even if I didn’t, what choice would I have? The fact that you are the only daily newspaper in this market makes it even more necessary that your editors draw a clear, bright line between opinion and news. There is enough opinion, bias and one-sided ideology in the leftist national media. A local paper that purports to be conservative should make it a point to be pure in what it presents as news. I wrote on a comment section like this about the FACT that as the Affordable Care Act is written, only people who sign up for health insurance on a state set up exchanges are eligible for federal subsidizes. There is a class action law suit that seems to point out that this was indeed the law. The author of the article seemed to think I was wrong. The case is now at the appellate level. It encouraging to note that there is a concern about fairness in the implementation of the ACA, especially when our state insurance commissioner has done everything to make it darn near impossible for people to get information. He should apply his duties in an unbiased way and let the consumers decide if they want to participate. Then to add insult to injury, the state legislator has now pass bills to prohibit state agencies whose duty is to assist consumers from doing so. So I take it the writer only wants articles that support one point of view in this community. What a warped idea. Again, glad you know something about fairness. It sure cuts both ways. O.K. the paper went and did a puff piece on a really bad law. Some people call this balanced and fair to add an opposing point of view. This would be fine if what they are writing about has merit. Obamacare has no merit. Sorry AC. But I think the writer has a point. You can't use "balanced reporting" as a defense when you feature trash such as Obamacare on the front page. I will defend you AC when you balance left or right stories with meaningful retort, and not publish articles for the sake of balance alone. Obamacare is garbage and should not have a defender that is well aware of this fact, and yet attempts to present it so as to look like as if they are being fair to the other side. If Louis, Carcraft, Localguy, and I are frustrated think how Mike Ryan and the editorial staff as well as the AC editors must feel when there is no national syndication that is not either far left or tilting left. It's too bad papers of the high quality of the AC have to rely on the shills of the left to disseminate the national and worldwide events. I'm sure if there were a conservative syndication they would take advantage of it. It is tough to see the puff pablum that was shown about Obamacare and the minimum wage, but I'm thankful articles like that are few and far between and we can continue on to the ACE pages and get the truthful information and edification of events. Think of all the unfortunates who get up every morning and have to suppress the urge to regurgitate as they read their leftist paper which is their only-source newspaper. Of course, they could always move to Augusta and get the truth---as long as they don't bring the liberal ways that they would be escaping with them. The AC is a serving that is heavily spiced with AP articles which I ignore. For national and international news I read articles at online sites. For local and state news I read the AC. You know, there were newspapers that only presented conservative viewpoints in their papers. They were in Nazi Germany and Russia. If you don't like certain articles, don't read them. Or start your own newspaper.
