When “Murray’s Milers” don their running shoes for this year’s Walk for Memories on Saturday (Jan. 25, 10 a.m.-noon, F. E. Madill) they’ll be doing it to honour a beloved family member and friend, and to help other families struck by Alzheimer’s and related dementias. So far, Murray’s Milers have raised $7,200, and they’d like to add to that amount at one of the liveliest Walk for Memories events in the area – Wingham’s. Murray Gerrie will hopefully be there too, as he has been for the previous six years. He won’t be walking, since he now uses a wheelchair. His wife Fran and daughter Pam Tiffin remember a time only a few years ago when Murray would walk for miles. As the disease that is quickly claiming his memory progressed, time ceased to be a consideration for him and his walks became more frequent, and more of a concern for his family. Fran recalls he’d go for a walk any time of day, any weather, even if he’d just returned from a walk. The day before he entered Huronlea Home for the Aged in Brussels, Murray went for 11 walks. One time he’d been at the hospital for a test, and before Fran could come and pick him up, he put on his coat and went for a walk. Fran and Pam finally found him in Lower Town, where he often went. Sometimes Bob Raper, an Alzheimer Society volunteer (Just for You program) would accompany Murray on his walks, and even continued walking with him at Huronlea. While Murray was still at home, Fran was always afraid he’d go for a walk at night and be hit by a car, especially in the winter when he’d have to walk on the road. There were times he’d go to bed around 8:30 p.m., but get up at 11 p.m. – or 2 a.m. – for breakfast and a walk. “Time meant nothing,” said Fran. And that meant she had to be on the alert. Caring for someone with dementia can be exhausting, this is one of the things the Alzheimer Society warns about. “The Alzheimer Society keeps telling caregivers not to wear themselves out,” said Fran. Both Fran and Pam say they received a lot of this kind of positive support and information from the Alzheimer Society. “The support groups are great,” said Pam. “I’d phone with questions and they would help… and make good suggestions,” added Fran. One of the things she’s learned is a form of Alzheimer’s disease runs in families. When Murray developed dementia (she recalls noticing changes as far back as 2005), she recognized the same behaviours as his father had. Both men also suffered a series of mini-strokes. Cathy Ritsema, executive director of the Huron Alzheimer Society, explained the familial form of Alzheimer’s disease accounts for only a small portion of cases (between five and seven per cent), with the remainder being the sporadic form, where there appears to be no genetic predisposition. However, strokes cause damage that can lead to dementia. Fran said she knew nothing about Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and found the Alzheimer’s support group very helpful. It was the Alzheimer Society that eventually directed her to the Community Care Access Centre. Information that can help caregivers is available – both Fran and Pam say don’t hesitate to contact the Alzheimer Society. There’s no need to try to cope with dementia in a loved one on your own. “Don’t try to hide it,” said Fran. Her experience is people in a small town are helpful and understanding.
